Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an endoscope shape detector which displays the insertion part images which indicate the insertion state of an insertion part with high accuracy on a screen by exactly detecting the position coordinates of coils without imparting stress to curving barrels constituting the endoscope and internal organs. SOLUTION: The insertion part 2a of the endoscope 2 is constituted by connecting a rigid front end 21, a vertically and laterally curvilinearly operative curving part 2 and a pliable flexible pipe 23. The curving part 22 is formed to a prescribed length size by freely turnably connecting a plurality of, for example, metallic curving barrels 24. For example, 12 pieces of the source coils 9A,..., (9L) are arranged in the prescribed positions within the insertion part 2a. The second source coil 9B is so constituted as to exist within the flexible pipe 23 without being arranged within the curving part 2b formed of the curving barrels 24,..., 24 when the first source coil 9A is arranged at the front end 21.
