Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease asymmetric properties when a medium tone is displayed to realize high-quality image display by constituting a photosetting type low mol.wt. liquid crystal showing optically positive uniaxial properties of a low mol.wt. liquid crystal film produced by fixing the twisted nematic alignment formed in the liquid crystal state by a photosetting reaction and a film showing optically negative anisotropy. SOLUTION: The element consists of the combination of a low mol.wt. liquid crystal film in which the twisted nematic alignment is stably maintained and a film showing optically negative anisotropy. The low mol.wt. liquid crystal film is prepared from a liquid crystal material essentially consisting of a low mol.wt. liquid crystal showing optically positive uniaxial properties. As for the photosetting type low mol.wt. liquid crystal showing optically positive uniaxial properties, a liquid crystal having biphenyl derivatives, phenylbenzoate derivatives, stilbene derivatives or the like as the basic structure can be used. As for the low mol.wt. liquid crystal, a liquid crystal showing thermotropic properties is preferable from the viewpoint of the film forming process.
