Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a fatty acid alkali metal salt solution efficiently and economically while using only raw materials compoundable into a soap composition by reacting an oil or fat with an alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of propylene glycol to form a flowable fatty acid alkali metal salt. SOLUTION: Soybean oil, palm oil, and coconut oil are preferable as the oil or fat. Examples of the alkali metal hydroxide are NaOH, KOH, Mg(OH)2, Ca(OH)2, and LiOH. Propylene glycol(PG) is one used as a hydrotropic agent. The alkali metal salt solution is prepared by charging an oil or fat, an alkali metal hydroxide, and propylene glycol into a reaction vessel, substituting air in the vessel with N2, and saponifying the oil or fat by heating. In this saponification, the concentration of PG is adjusted preferably to 15-50 wt.%; and that of water, preferably to 15-25 wt.%. It is preferable that after the saponification, the resultant product is aged and adjusted with water or PG to give a metal salt solution having a concentration of 50-75 wt.% and a viscosity of 40-100 cP/50 deg.C.
