Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carrier for treating garbage having sufficient strength, gas permeability and water content adjustability and to furnish a method for treating garbage maintaining a high volume reduction ratio by use of the carrier. SOLUTION: This carrier for treating garbage consists of porous grains formed from hydrophilic materials and has 80-90% porosity, 300-3,000 wt.% water absorptivity and 1-20 mm diameter. As for the method for treating garbage, only the carrier or a mixture of the carrier and a natural lignocellulose substrate or a synthetic-resin porous substrate is introduced into a garbage treating machine provided with an agitator and ventilator, and the garbage is treated.
