Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the number of fine sulfur particles after an absorbing stage by bringing a catalyst container containing a chelate consisting of a chelating agent and polyvalent metal ions and supply gas to a contact state to generate oxidation-reduction reaction and, after gas-liquid separation, recovering a catalyst soln. containing reduced elementary sulfur. SOLUTION: The gas to be treated from a line 2 and the catalyst soln. from a line 3 are brought to a contact state in a catalyst chamber (absorber) 1 to generate oxidation-reduction reaction and a mixture of the catalyst soln. containing partially reduced sulfur particles in a suspended state and gas from which the greater part of sulfur is removed is introduced into a gas-liquid separation drum 5 through a line 4 to separate the catalyst soln. containing suspended sulfur particles and this soln. is sent to an elementary sulfur separator 15 through a pump 8 and a soln. separating junction 10. The catalyst soln. from which the greater part of sulfur is removed is succeedingly supplied to a flash drum 24 through a decompressor 23 to recover the gas in the catalyst soln. while sending the degassed soln. to a regeneration zone 27.
