Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a pitch fiber bundle for carbon fiber having low fineness and a pitch-based carbon fiber bundle, especially suitable for production of carbon fiber woven fabrics and a carbon fiber prepreg having a low weight per unit area, and provide a method for producing the pitch-based carbon fiber having low fineness at a low cost and in improved productivity in comparison with conventional methods. SOLUTION: Plural pitch fibers are divided into two or more bundles and interlacing by air flow is applied to the each bundle to provide a first fiber bundle, and plurality of the first fiber bundles are joined and interlacing by air flow is applied to the joined pitch fiber bundle to provide a second fiber bundle and the pitch fiber is taken off from the second fiber bundle. Thereby, since the same productivity as that of a carbon fiber having multi-fineness is kept in each step of spinning, infusibilization, carbonization, and the like, production of a carbon fiber having low fineness is finally made possible, and the carbon fiber having low fineness can industrially and inexpensively be produced in good productivity.
