Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for the production of a preform of a large diameter without inhibiting vitrification or fiber drawing. SOLUTION: A heating means for a preform by a plasma torch is joined with a material supply means so that a plurality of layers can be produced for each layer. By relatively moving the preform/torch with or without accompanying the material supply, a new layer is deposited on the preform or the finally deposited layer is subjected to glazing. This method is started from one intermediate layer during depositing a series of layers in such a manner that the length of the layer is gradually decreased by decreasing on only one side of the preform and that the preform is made thin at the ends. By decreasing the layer on only one side, the thickness of the layer can be regulated to the level of the layers in a specified region 10' deposited before decreasing the length. |
