Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compact the size of a hoistway of an elevator in respect to the horizontally projected area. SOLUTION: This elevator is provided with a first suspension sheave 11 and a second suspension sheave 12 provided on one side of a hoistway 17, a third suspension sheave 13 provided on the other side of the hoistway 17, a car 4 provided to travel vertically in the hoistway, a winding drum type winding machine 15 provided on one side of the hoistway, a first rope 18 attached fixedly to the winding drum type winding machine 15 on one end, then hooked on the first suspension sheave 11 and the third suspension sheave 13 sequentially, and attached fixedly to the other end of the car 4 on the other end, and a second rope 19 attached fixedly to a winding drum 15a on one end, hooked on the first suspension sheave 11, the third suspension sheave 13, and the second suspension sheave 12 sequentially, and attached fixedly to one end of the car 4 on the other end. The first suspension sheave 11, the second suspension sheave 12, the third suspension sheave 13, and the winding drum type winding machine 15 are placed approximately inside the horizontally projected area 20 of the car.
