Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce or prevent the loss and/or ageing of a catalyst by hot spots by using a metal having a thermal conductivity of at least a specified value in a specified temperature range as a diluent which can be used in a catalyst composition. SOLUTION: A metal applicable to a catalyst composition has thermal conductivity of at least 0.4 W/cm/K in 400-1573 K and substantially inactive to reaction materials and a reaction product. Especially, copper is preferable owing to its high thermal conductivity and high density giving a high heat capacity per unit volume. A metal diluent having a similar geometrical form and similar dimensions to those of a granular catalyst to be mixed is used preferably. A catalyst to be diluted with the metal diluent can be used in an exothermic reaction in a fixed bed. In this way, the loss and/or ageing of the catalyst can be reduced or prevented. |
