Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound stable to rays of specific long wavelength, sufficiently high in color density, and capable of giving thermal recording materials with high unsensitized preservability and excellent color developability, light resistance and biopreservability. SOLUTION: This new compound is a compound of formula I (R1 to R4 are each H, a halogen, alkyl, aryl, SR10 or the like; R5 to R9 are each H, a halogen, alkyl, aryl, COOR12, CONR12R13 or the like; R10, R12 and R13 are each H, an alkyl or aryl; wherein at least one of R1 to R4 is either COOR10, CONR10 R11, SO2R10, SO2NR10R11, nitro or cyano; R5 to R9 are each either COOR12, CONR12R13, SO2R12, SO2NR12R13, nitro or cyano), e.g. a compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by diazotizing a compound of formula III followed by cyclization.
