Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound by a method other than traditional one by reacting an alkaline metal salt of malonic acid with a halide in the presence of water and a phase transfer catalyst. SOLUTION: This compound is obtained by reacting an alkaline metal salt of malonic acid (preferably disodium malonate) with a halide shown by the formula R-X (R is a 1-10C alkyl or the like; and X is chlorine, bromine or the like) in the presence of water and a phase transfer catalyst. The alkaline metal salt is used in the form of aqueous solution, which is preferably obtained by catalytically oxidizing 1,3-propanediol in the presence of an aqueous hydroxide of alkaline metal. The phase transfer catalyst is preferably of a quaternary ammonium salt (more preferably chloride or bromide). It is preferable to use the halide at 80 to 150 deg.C and above atmospheric pressure, when it is a low- boiling compound. It is also preferable to use an inert solvent immiscible with water (e.g. chlorobenzene). |
