Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the rate of hydrogenation without requiring a large amount of titanium by producing a catalyst composition effective in the hydrogenation of olefinic double bonds, particularly in the selective hydrogenation of olefinic double bonds present in diene-vinylbenzene copolymers by the reaction of specified components. SOLUTION: The catalyst composition effective in the selective hydrogenation of olefinic double bonds present in styrene-butadiene and styrene-isoprene block copolymers is produced by utilizing the reaction of at least one cyclopentadienyl- transition metal complex having a composition of the formula (R)(R1)M1(R2)(R3) (R is an anion containing an η5-cyclopentadienyl ring, M1 is titanium, zirconium or the like, R2 and R3 are each an anionic group and R1 is selected from cyclopentadienyl and R2) with an alkylation composition consisting of an organometallic compound and an organic derivative of aluminum. |
