Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more rapidly complete a desilvering process in a fixing step by using a fixing composition containing a specified 1,2,4-triazole or its tautomer of an arbitrary form and making a specified concentration of ammonium ions a specific value % of all cations in the composition. SOLUTION: The fixing composition contains (a) 0.8-1.6 mol/l thiosulfate fixer, (b) at least 2 mol/l thiocyanate fixer and (c) at least 0.001 mol/l 1,2,4- triazole of the formula or its tautomer of an arbitrary form and the concentration of ammonium ions in the fixing composition is at least 50 mol% of all cations in the composition. In the formula, R is H or a monovalent substituent having <=12 atoms other than H and one H atom on an N atom in the triazole ring or its tautomer of an arbitrary form may be substituted by a substituent identical with or different from that defined by R.
