Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize the correspondence of engine operation by varying the optimization reference considered in determining the engine controlled variable as a function of external and/or internal influence quantity during one running cycle. SOLUTION: From the operation of an accelerating pedal 100, a driver type 102 (sports driver or the like) is determined, and according to the selected operation variable, the running status 104 at that time (city running or suburban running) is determined. A transmission train system 106 determines weighting assigned to the individual optimization references (consumption, emission, heat, dynamic characteristic, noise and the like) from the driver type 102 and the running status 104. The transmission train system 106 gives a speed change ratio as a function of the driver 100 to the control for the transmission train 108. The transmission train system 106 determines the effective control reference 114 to an engine. In this case, the engine status 116 at that time is considered. The effective control reference 114 shows the optimum controlled variable (optimum injection progress, the optimum air supply quantity and the like) to each optimization reference as an engine controlled variable 112.
