Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem with a discriminating device for paper sheet or the like provided with a reflection type optical sensor for obtaining the information on paper sheet or the like by receiving reflected light rays from the paper sheet or the like that the device acquires wrong information due to the positional deviation etc. of printing between the front and rear side surfaces of paper sheet or the like at the time of correcting the sensor by receiving the reflected light from the surface opposite to the sensor or to eliminate the influence of a secular change on the discriminating device. SOLUTION: A member 6 which transmits and reflects the light emitted from a sensor 3 is provided on the light incidence/emission surface and the sensor 3 is corrected by receiving reflected light from the member 6. Therefore, the discriminating accuracy of a discriminating device is improved, because the device is not affected by the information written on the rear side surface of paper sheet or the like 11 contained in the reflected light from the surface opposite to the sensor 3.
