Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a VP changeover control method and device where a fault in a duplex virtual path VP segment is reliably detected in an ATM network and an active system VP is quickly switched into a standby system VP. SOLUTION: A changeover end node device 10 for a duplex VP segment transmits control cells for a VP monitor and state notice to both an active system VP and a standby system VP at a prescribed period, monitors the reception state of a control cell from an opposite node and discriminates a VP fault when reception of the control cell is interrupted for a prescribed interval. On the occurrence of a fault in the active system VP, after confirming the normality of the standby system VP, a VP changeover request is sent to an opposite node and the VP is switched after awaiting a changeover reply.
