Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly reliable and inexpensive optical waveguide by utilizing a process mainly consisting of an ion exchanging method. SOLUTION: The optical waveguide 1 is constituted so as to form a core part 3 penetrating into a glass substrate 2 by a manufacturing process mainly utilizing the ion exchanging method. Stress applying parts 4 arranged on both the sides of the core part 3 through proper distances are formed by exchanging ions constituting the glass substrate 2 and ions having ion radii larger than that of the constitutional ions.
