Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a monodisperse gelatinous cation exchanger with high stability and high purity by constituting a chloromethylated and sulfonated seed polymer of a crosslinked polymer having a specified range of swelling index and containing a nonvolatile soluble component by <=1 wt.%. SOLUTION: A seed polymer which forms a suspension in a continuous water phase is swollen in a monomer mixture consisting of vinyl monomers, a crosslinking agent and a free radical initiator to polymerize the monomer mixture in the seed polymer, and chloromethylated and then sulfonated. The chloromethylated and sulfonated seed polymer forms a crosslinked polymer having 2.5 to 7.5 swelling index and <=1 wt.% nonvolatile soluble component. Thereby, a monodisperse gelatinous cation exchanger having high stability and high purity can be produced.
