Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent toner image transferred to transfer material from an image carrier from being transferred again to the image carrier. SOLUTION: A slit substrate 3 provided with a slit 3e is positioned in a transfer part T between the image carrier 1 and a transfer backside electrode 2 so as not come into contact with the image carrier 1 or a transfer body 4. The voltage of the transfer backside electrode 2, electrode 3a and electrode 3b, electrode 3c and electrode 3d when the image carrier 1 is grounded are V1, V2, and V3 in this order. Thus a toner image 5 on the image carrier 1 is transferred to the surface of the transfer body 4 without any turbulence and becomes the toner image 6. Furthermore, since the image carrier 1, the slit substrate 3, and the transfer body 4 are not in contact, the toner image 6 transferred to the transfer body 4 is not transferred again to the image carrier 1.
