Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve convenience by selecting a minimum value from unused display numbers and providing this regarding a display number to be recognized by a user corresponding to a cassette number recorded in a magnetic tape and different for each cassette. SOLUTION: If a cassette number (CID) is not provided to a magnetic tape when video recording is performed, a cassette number registering means 1 decides a number as a CID larger by one than a CID used so far, and a cassette number inserting means 2 records this in the perpendicular return line interval (VBI) of a magnetic tape 50. After the video recording, a display number registering means 5 decides a minimum value among vacant display numbers (AID) as an AID. A corresponding control means 7 stores recorded program information containing the AID, the CID, a starting tape position, a program title and the like in a storage means 6. Next time the cassette is inserted, a cassette number extracting means 3 reads the CID from the VBI, and the corresponding control means 7 displays the recorded program information on a TV screen based on this.
