Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface defect detecting device for a steel strip capable of executing surface testing good in precision by using a surface defect gauge in a pickling line. SOLUTION: On the outlet side of a washing tank 8 in a pickling line, a draining device for a steel strip provided with a compressed air jetting header 21a jetting compressed air on a steel strip 1, a linger roll 10a and compressed air jetting headers 21b or 21c jetting compressed air on the steel strip 1 in this order, a dryer 12 drying the steel strip 1 and surface defect gauges 20a and 20b detecting surface defects in the steel strip on the roll surfaces of guide rolls 13a and 13b running so as to be wound with the steel strip are arranged.
