Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a running safety apparatus in which a collision preventing effect by an automatic steering operation is made compatible with a collision preventing effect by a manual steering operation by a method wherein, when a steering device used to prevent contact with an oncoming vehicle is steered automatically, a margin which controls a vehicle behavior by the voluntary steering operation of a driver is left. SOLUTION: A vehicle-state computing means M6 computes a vehicle motion state on the basis of the magnitude of a vehicle behavior detected by a vehicle-behavior detection means S3, on the basis of the margin amount of a vehicle behavior which is set by a vehicle- behavior margin-amount setting means M4 and which can be generated by the voluntary steering operation of a driver and on the basis of the magnitude of a vehicle behavior which is estimated by a vehicle-behavior estimating means M5 and which is generated at a time when a steering device is steered by a steering control means M3. At this time, when the vehicle motion state exceeds a prescribed state range, a steering-amount correction means M7 correctes the steering amount of the steering control means M3. As a result, when the vehicle behavior is already generated at the start of an automatic steering operation and even when a new vehicle behavior is generated by an automatic steering operation, it is possible to leave a margin which generates an additional vehicle behavior by the voluntary collision preventing operation of the driver.
