Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a superior picture through the use of digital printing by increasing the exposure lacking gamma of the digital color picture through the use of medium exposure lacking gamma control algorithm, and processing the picture whose exposure lacking gamma is controlled through the use of scene balance algorithm and contrast normalization algorithm. SOLUTION: A digital scanner 12 scans a picture on a photograph medium and a digital picture is generated. A shift value correcting the picture by using scene balance algorithm is given to the digital picture. Exposure lack is evaluated and corrected and the picture which is subsampled is normalized by using contrast normalization algorithm. When exposure considerably lacks, the picture element printing gray levels of red, green and blue are controlled so that all film minimum gray levels become 0.5. The balanced picture is mapped onto a whole color printing paper characteristic curve.
