PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a detergent compsn. which has an action esp. for softening and protecting keratinized fibers and has a low aq. toxicity by incorporating a specific surfactant and a specific ester into the same. SOLUTION: This compsn. contains at least one surfactant selected from among anionic, nonionic, and amphoteric surfactants and an ester represented by the formula: R1-CO-O(CH2CH2O)a-R2 in a wt. ratio of the surfactant to the ester of (1/1)-(600/1), pref. (1.5/1)-(400/1). In the formula, (a) is 0-20; R2 is a 6-20C monofunctional hydrocarbon group; R1 is a 2C or higher, at least monohydroxylated, monofunctional hydrocarbon group, pref. selected from among groups represented by formulas: C6Hn(OH)m, CH(OH)-CH(R3)-COO-(CH2 CH2O)a, R4, and CH(OH)-CH3; (n) is 3-4; (m) is 1-2; m+n is 5; R3 is H or OH; a' is 0-20; and R4 is R2, pref. alkyl.
