Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the presence/absence of ink in a printing head without wasting a recording paper by setting a land part which moves between a face position where the part faces an ink discharge opening and a non-face position different from the face position and where a discharged ink is landed and detecting the landed ink. SOLUTION: An apparatus 40 for detecting the presence/absence of an ink is provided with a rectangular parallelopiped frame 46 having an opening 44 formed at an upper face. A cylindrical drum 50 having a white outer circumferential face 50a and rotated by a driving mechanism about a rotary shaft 48 is rotatably fixed inside the apparatus. The ink is landed to the drum from an ink discharge opening 20a. A cleaning member 52 is arranged sideways to be in strong contact with the drum 50, so that the landed ink is wiped easily. While the drum 50 is present at a face position facing the ink discharge opening 20a, one line is printed when the ink remains at a printing head and no line is printed when the ink is not left, which is detected by a reflecting type sensor 42.
