Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for medicines and agrochemicals in a high yield by halogenating a specific benzylamine derivative. SOLUTION: This method for producing a 4-halogenobenzylamine derivative of formula II (X is a halogen) [for example, R-(+)-1-(4-bromophenyl)ethylamine], preferably its optically active isomer, or its salt comprises halogenrating a benzylamine derivative of formula I (R1 is H or a lower alkyl; R2 is a lower alkylamino, an acylamino or the like), preferably its optically active isomer, or its salt [for example, R-(+)-1-phenylethylamine] with a halogenating agent such as bromine preferably a Lewis acid such as aluminum chloride in the presence (absence) of a solvent such as methyl chloride preferably at -40 to 20 deg.C for 1-10 hr. The Lewis acid and the halogenating agent are preferably used in amounts of 1.0-1.2 fold moles and 0.9-1.1 fold moles, respectively, that of the compound of formula I or its salt. |
