Summary:The ultrasonic waves used for testing are generated from at least one head to reach the long object under test via a coupling medium. A receiving arrangement for ultrasonic waves is placed to intercept waves reflected from faults and produce signals for an evaluator ascertaining the nature of faults in the object irradiated. At least three ultrasonic test heads (2,3,4) are placed in a row along a line (7) or their transmitting surfaces extend in parallel with the line. The outer heads (2,4) are receivers. The middle one(s) (3) is at least a transmitting type. The line (7) is inclined w.r.t. the length axis (6) of the object (1) at an angle lying between 0 and 45 deg.
