Summary:The removal of the pyrite from finely divided coal with a high pyritic sulphur content is effected by a process which comprises modifying the hydrophilicity of the pyrite in a time period of less than 5 minutes by the use of suitable cells of Sulfolobus and separating the thus modified pyrite from the particles of coal by agglomeration or flotation techniques. This process makes it possible to obtain coal with a reduced ash and sulphur content compared to the initial levels, in good yield, and in a short time.
