For controlling the contact pressure between a contact roller, which is mounted in the machine frame and is provided with a drive, and a roll being wound, formed by winding a film web on a winding shaft or a core, the roll being wound is mounted so as to be rotatable between two arms which are parallel to one another and mounted so as to be pivotable in the machine frame. To drive it and wind it with essentially uniform web tension, the roll being wound is pressed against the contact roller. The contact pressure is adjusted by means of a pivot drive as actuating element, which is controlled by a controller which forms the actuating signals from input variables corresponding to the respective weight of the roll being wound and to the angle of inclination of the support arms with respect to the vertical, and by comparison with a set point value which corresponds to a desired contact pressure. To allow the force component resulting from the weight force of the roll being wound and acting in the direction of the contact roller to be determined more accurately, the anglular velocity or rotational speed of the winding shaft or roll being wound and the velocity of the web to be wound are measured and the measurement values are input into the controller as parameters for determining the angle of inclination.
