The plug connector has a plug side for releasable coupling with a counter-plug. It has a contact carrier (12) of insulating material which contains several receptacle chambers (13). These are arranged in at least one row. A contact element (16) can be axially mounted in each chamber (13) through the plug side. The contact element (16) has a fastening section (21) for an electric lead and a box-type middle section (22), a contact section (17) connected to the middle section (22). A locking section (29) is arranged between the fastening section (21) and the middle section (22). It has a smaller surface cross-section than these sections (21,22). The locking section (29) has at least one locking element (31). This can be inserted in the contact carrier (12) to a locking end position. The locking element (31) partially covers the fastening section (21) and the middle section (22) of the respective element (16).In a first movement section, the locking element (31) can be moved axially against the assembly direction of the contact element (16), from the plug side, to an intermediate locking position. In a second movement section, the locking element (31) can be moved perpendicular to the mounting direction of the contact element (16) and along the row of chambers (13) to the locking position of the contact elements (16) in the chambers (13).
