Summary:The rivet, screw, or bolt comprises a rod-shaped body (10) having a head (14) and/or thread (12) on the outer periphery. A longitudinal hole (18) is open at one end. A rod (20) is disposed in the hole and fixed at its inner end (22) to the inner end (24) of the hole. A light transmissive window (34) is fixed in the opening (30) of the hole. A flexible, light transmissive, fluid holder (38) holds a coloured fluid (40) and pressed by the free end of the rod against the window. When a longitudinal strain is developed in the body the rod releases the holder sufficiently for the coloured fluid to obscure the coloured indicator (36) on the free end of the rod. The position of the rod in the hole is adjustable to set the limit value of the stress to which the fastener should be subjected.
