Summary:A smoking article (15) comprises a coherent mass (9) of combustible tobacco-containing material having at least one passage extending through it between two spaced openings in the surface of the mass, the tobacco mass having such porosity as to support combustion when ignited and such density and porosity as to substantially occlude gas flow therethrough. The article preferably has at least one air-permeable plug (5, 6) of readily ignitable material blocking the passage at one or both ends. The tobacco-containing mass may include non-tobacco filler particles, such as carbon or clays, and the plug may contain a flavorant. The articles may be made by shaping a mixture of combustible tobacco material with a volatile liquid, for example a mixture of water and ethanol, under pressure into a discrete coherent mass, preferably by extrusion, forming a passage through the mass, and drying the mass to a porosity and density such as to substantially occlude gas flow therethrough but to support combustion when ignited.
