Summary:A press has a ram 16 driven by a driven crank 23 (or cam) and a linkage linking the ram thereto, the linkage moving the ram into the cutting zone at a speed which limits the increase in cutting force to a period which is less than the time represented by the period (i.e. one cycle) of the natural frequency of the press components disposed in the direction of the operative mechanical force lines of the press. The drive incorporates one or more cranks (23; 33) and linkages (20; 30) which are articulatingly connected by at least one link (22; 32), at least one oscillating link (21; 31) pivotally supported at a fixed point on the frame is articulated to the point of connection of the said link (22; 32) to the said linkage (20; 30). Weights (24) balance the movement of the ram through levers (25) mounted at fixed points on the press frame.
