Summary:Isothiazolone derivs. of formulae (I) and (II) are new. R = H, halogen or 1-4C alkyl; R1 = H or halogen; or R and R1 together form a fused-on 5- to 7-membered carbocyclic ring which may be aromatic; R2 = H or 1-3C alkyl; R3 = H, or opt. substd. 1-18C alkyl, 2-18C alkenyl, 2-18C alkynyl, 4-8C cycloalkyl, 4-8C cycloalkenyl or aralkyl. R = H; R1 = H or Cl; R2 = CH3; R3 = H, CH3, pentyl or 1,4-benzoquinone. (I) and (II) are antimicrobial agents, active against a broad spectrum of bacterial fungi e.g. PS. aerujinosa, E. coli, S. aureus and Aspergillus niger. They may be used to protect e.g. wood , paint, adhesives, paper, textile, leather, plastics, cardboard, lubricants, cosmetics, food, coating, feed and industrial cooling water from microbial attack.
