Summary:The invention relates to a catalyst for decreasing nitrogen oxide in the lean exhaust gas of automobile engines. On a structurally reinforcing body, it contains a first catalytic coating of a high surface area aluminium oxide and/or cerium oxide impregnated with a mixture of iridium and platinum as catalytically active noble metal components. On the first layer is applied a second catalytic coating of a zeolite which contains copper and/or iron and is of the mordenite type.
