Summary: | Surfaces of indigenous zeolites are modified by choosing zeolites of specific physical and chemical characteristics. These are crushed and ground, avoiding metallic contact in grinders, and classified. Surface modification is carried out by immersing zeolites in aq. solns. of purposely chosen salts of organic quaternary amines. The concn. of these amines corresponds to 50-100% of the ion-exchange capacity of the zeolites. Conversely, small vols. of concentrated quaternary amine solns. are sprayed on the zeolites. Suspns. are agitated at room temp. for 0.5-24 hrs. Treated zeolites are air-dried at a max. of 60 deg C. This method produces modified zeolites having useful ion-exchange and sorption characteristics. |
