Summary:1492132 Olefin polymerization catalysts HOECHST AG 28 Feb 1975 [20 March 1974 30 Jan 1975 (2)] 8563/75 Heading C3P Olefins having 3-10 carbon atoms may be polymerized in the presence of catalysts formed by reacting a dialkyl aluminium chloride with titanium tetrachoride in a molar ratio of 0À8 : 1 to 1À5 : 1 in an inert hydrocarbon at -20 to +20‹ C., subjecting the solid reaction product to a first thermal treatment at 40‹ to 150‹ C., the product being separated and washed with an inert hydrocarbon before or after said first thermal treatment, and to a second thermal treatment in the presence of a dialkyl ether while in suspension in an inert hydrocarbon, separating and washing the solid reaction product with an inert hydrocarbon and mixing it with a dialkyl aluminium halide and optionally a cyclopolyene. Specified olefins are C 3-8 1- olefins, optionally with ethylene, and the polymerization may be effected in the presence of hydrogen. In examples propylene and 4- methylpentene-1 are polymerized in the presence of catalysts prepared by reducing titanium tetrachloride with ethyl aluminium sesquichloride, thermally treating the product without and in the presence of di-n-butyl ether, optionally after treating the product with diethyl aluminium chloride with or without cycloheptatriene-1,3,5, cyclooctatetraene-1,3,5,7 or propylene, and optionally mixing the product with diethyl aluminium chloride and cycloheptatriene-1,3,5.
