Summary:A process for the preparation of a catalyst suitable for the dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons comprises bringing into finely divided form a solid, substantially dry mixture of (1) at least one compound of an alkali metal and/or at least one compound of an alkaline earth metal with the exception of Be, and (2) a compound of silver and/or at least one compound of the rare earth metal group (i.e. elements of atomic number 57-71 and Sc and Y), the mixture having a surface area of at least 1 square metre per gram. Additionally the composition may contain a transition metal having an atomic number from 22-29, 40-46, 72-79 and 82-84 inclusive. Carriers which may be used are pumice, cement, Al2O3 or SiO2. Specified elements are Cu, Ag, Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zr, Ti, La, Ce, Pr, Di*, Bi, V, Mn, Cr, Mo, W, Cl, Br, I, Co, Ni, Fe, and Pd. [* = Didyurium.]
