Summary:In a method of producing steel in a rotary refining vessel into which oxygen is injected through a lance, iron oxide is fed into the bath through the lance by means of a mechanical feeder, the operation of which is controlled in accordance with the temperature of the bath. The mechanical feeder may be a vibrating device driven by an electric motor, the speed of which is regulated by the signal from a pyrometer immersed in the bath. In a suitable control apparatus a reference voltage corresponding to the desired bath temperature is opposed to a voltage corresponding to the pyrometer signal, and the difference between them amplified to control the rate of iron oxide input. The reference voltage is preferably governed by a controller programmed in accordance with the successive stages of the refining process; the controller may simultaneously monitor the rate of oxygen input.
