The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0877497/IV (b)/1> wherein R represents a C1-C10 alkyl group and R1 represents a C1-C4 alkylene group or R and R1 together with the carbon atom to which they are attached represent a cycloalkyl group, the preparation thereof by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:0877497/IV (b)/2> with an aromatic chloroformate or phosgene and treating the product in either case with ammonia; and pharmaceutical compositions (see Group VI) containing the products. The products, which may be in optically active or racemic forms, have hypnotic properties. Phenyl chloroformate is prepared by reacting phenol and phosgene. Chloro-ethynyl-alkanols of the formula I above are prepared by reacting appropriate ketones with ethynyl magnesium bromide. According to the Provisional Specification, the compounds of the invention may be prepared by reacting compounds of the formula I above with potassium cyanate and trichloroacetic acid.
