Summary:823,551. Electric furnaces. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. April 10, 1956, No. 10878/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XXXV] In a furnace or lehr for heating glass comprising electrical heating elements on areas of the walls the radiant energy emitted from the areas of the walls is maintained between predetermined limits by a radiation measuring device which controls the current in the elements. Furnaces are shown for tempering a sheet of glass suspended from an overhead track and for bending and annealing sheet glass for windscreens. In the latter, moulds are carried on trucks and different degrees of heating are provided in different sections of the furnace. A number of thermosensitive devices are aimed respectively at different wall areas to control the amount of heat supplied to a predetermined area of glass. The determination of the optimum wall temperature for maximum absorption and uniform heating by optical testing is also described.
