Summary:785,904. Cutting glass. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Jan. 9, 1956, No. 677/56. Class 56. A pliers-like device for breaking a sheet of glass 26 along a score line 28 comprises a jaw 18 having a uniformly convex surface 24, and a jaw 20 having a pair of convex surfaces 30 flanking a central groove 32. The rounded surfaces 24 and 30 enable the glass to roll during the cut-running process, thus preventing spalling. A mark 34, on the end surface of the jaw 20, opposite the highest portion 36 of the surface 24, is aligned with the score line 28. In a modification for breaking thick glass, e.g. over # inch in thickness, the surfaces 24, 30 are given relative movement by hydraulic means. Shock absorbing pads may be set in the surface 24 at both ends and in the central groove 32 of the surface 30, extending approximately 1/16 inch above the highest portions of the surfaces 24, 30.
