Summary:775,103. Finishing fabrics. SLAZENGERS, Ltd. April 19, 1955 [April 29, 1954], No. 12445/54. Class 42 (1). [Also in Group XV] A tennis or like ball consists of a resilient core to which is adhesively secured a knitted, braided or crocheted yarn which is then raised and felted to have the appearance of a seamless cover. The yarn may include up to 75 per cent of fibres of a polyamide such as nylon or a polyester such as that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Terylene," these fibres being straight or crimped. The yarn may be treated with a gum which is washed out after the cover has been stuck to the core. The cover may be formed of two knitted hemispherical cups, two knitted discs moulded to hemispherical shape or a knitted bag into which the core can be inserted through a slit. Several of these bags can be knitted as a unit, the cores being inserted and then the bags separated. Alternatively, a cover may be knitted around a core or several may be knitted around several cores, the balls being then separated. When a join in the cover is necessary, it is effected by a feltable strand. The cover parts can have a backing of non-feltable material to improve the adhesion to the core.
