A device adapted for use in the application of paint or distemper comprises a hollow open-ended cylindrical member 1 axially rotatable upon internally disposed bearing members, the cylindrical member being provided with a slit 2 running from end to end thereof wherein the ends of a strip of absorbent material 5 wrapped around the cylindrical member may be clamped. The clamping action may be due to the springiness of the material of which the cylindrical member is constructed or it may be provided by two metal strips 3 riveted to the inner wall of the cylinder and engaging with a slider 4. The internal bearing members, disposed at the ends of the cylindrical member, may consist of two pulleys 6 rotatable on a shaft 7 and retained on the shaft by a collar 8 and a spring clip 9, the latter engaging in a groove 10 near the end of the shaft. The pulleys fit tightly inside the cylinder and retain therein the tucked-in edges of the strip of absorbent material which should have a thick pile, such as lambswool. Alternatively, the strip of <PICT:0738894/III/1> <PICT:0738894/III/2> material may have its ends held inside the slit by a separate clip of spring wire attached thereto inside the cylindrical member.
