A multiple strainer comprises a casing having a plurality of compartments each having an inlet and an outlet on opposite sides, an apertured baffle in each compartment inclined upwardly from the bottom of the inlet, strainer baskets disposed in the apertures in the baffles and having their tops inclined correspondingly, removable covers for the casing, valves for selectively closing inlets and outlets, and means for operating the valves. Liquid entering one of two chambers 2, 3, Fig. 1, by an inlet 17, Fig. 3, (shown closed by a valve 46 in Fig. 3), passes through a number (four, as shown) of strainer baskets 24 having flanges 23 inclined so as to lie in grooves 22a surrounding apertures 22 in a baffle 21 extending from a point below the inlet to a point above the outlet 18 of the chamber. Either of the outlets 18 may be closed by a valve 46a, Fig. 1, having a grooved member 43 into which is pressed a member 40 by a spring 40a. The member 40 is held on a sleeve 42 which has sliding engagement with cylindrical members 36, 37 and which may be moved from the position shown in Fig. 1, where the left half is wholly within the member 36, to the position where the right half is wholly within the member 37, by rotation of an axially fixed hand wheel 51, the screwed shaft 45 of which engages in a threaded portion 44 of the sleeve 42. In the latter position of the sleeve the valve 46a would cover the outlet 18 of the chamber 3. A guide bar 98 inside the sleeve 42 is secured at 99 to the member 36. The valve 46, Fig. 3, is moved over the inlets 17 by a similar mechanism 25, Fig. 1, operated in unison with the mechanism 25a by sprocket wheels 56 and a chain 57. Access to the chambers 2, 3 is gained by raising.covers 6, 6a, normally secured by bolts and C-washers, about a common hinge 62. Eye-bolts 12b, rest members 13 and air relief valves 14 are provided on the covers. In Fig. 4 the valve 92 has a projection 93 loosely secured between spring clips 96 on a rod 77 which may be rotated by a key 82 operated by an axially-fixed handwheel 84 and engaging a groove 81 in the rod, the rod on such rotation being constrained to move axially (and thus move the valve 92) by movement of a threaded head 80 in a threaded portion 79 of a member 70. Sight holes 53, 54, Fig. 1, indicate the position of the sleeve.
