Summary:A rotor assembly 10 for a brushless permanent magnet motor includes a shaft having a first portion 24 having a first diameter, a second portion 26 having a second diameter, and a third portion 28 having a third diameter. The rotor assembly includes a first bearing assembly 16 mounted to the first portion of the shaft, a permanent magnet 23 mounted to the second portion of the shaft, and a second bearing assembly 18 mounted to the third portion of the shaft. The second portion is located intermediate the first portion and the third portion, the second diameter is less than the first diameter, and the third diameter is less than the first and second diameters. The electric motor may be used in a vacuum cleaner or a haircare appliance.
