Summary:A fuel injector 1 for direct injection of gaseous fuel, such as hydrogen, extending along an axial direction (A) comprising: an injector body 2 defining a fuel passage 4, a valve seat 3.1, an outlet opening 5, an outward opening pintle 10 which is received in the injector body 2 to be axially movable between open and closed positions, an armature element 15, for engaging the pintle and being axially movable with the pintle into the open position and back to the closed armature position, and an actuator element 7 to initiate the opening movement. Further included is a damping space 25 which is increased in volume by the opening movement, and wherein a valve mechanism 35 closes a connecting path 27 between the damping space 25 and the fuel passage 4 during the opening movement and opens the connecting path 27 during the closing movement. The injector prevents impact damage by reducing the impact loads.
