Summary:An ophthalmic construction 303 includes an ophthalmic substrate 302 with an ophthalmic surface 301, a polymeric recipience layer 304 including a polymer with a photochromic dye 307 within the layer and an overcoat layer 306. The polymeric recipience layer has a first surface 301 attached to the ophthalmic surface and a second surface 305 opposite the first surface. The overcoat layer coats the polymeric recipience layer and is fixed to its second surface. At least one of the polymer and the polymer recipience layer has a König hardness with a range of 20 to 80 seconds and the ultimate elongation of the polymer is within a range of 250% to 900%. The thickness of the ophthalmic construction, defined by the shortest normal distance between the ophthalmic substrate and the exterior surface of the ophthalmic construction distal to the ophthalmic substrate, is at most 60 micrometers (μm). The ophthalmic construction may also include a first hardcoat layer that coats the overcoat layer and is fixed to the side of the overcoat layer facing the exterior surface of the ophthalmic construction. The first hardcoat layer may have a König hardness of at least 100 or 120 seconds.
