Summary:A head-up display system has a two-dimensional eye-box 608 and an image projector 507 with a picture generating unit 504 and an optical system 506,508. The picture generating unit includes a spatial light modulator which spatially modulates the light to display a hologram. The optical system relays spatially modulated light from the picture generating unit to an optical combiner 602 and a movement assembly moves the image projector between multiple positions. The spatially modulated light relayed to the optical combiner forms a virtual image viewed from a sub-eye-box with a position in a first dimension dependent on the position of the image projector and the eye-box is the sum of the sub-eye-boxes associated with each of the multiple positions of the image projector. The movement assembly may move the image projector rectilinearly between the multiple positions. A hologram engine may generate a holographic reconstruction of a computer generated hologram on a light receiving surface where its size or shape depends on the position of the image projector. There may be four/six or more positions of the image projector. The size of the eye-box/sub-eye-box in the first dimension may be 100 millimetres or more/50 millimetres or less respectively.
