Summary:A multilayer geogrid having a polymeric layer and a compressible cellular layer and a method of increasing confinement of soils and aggregate using the multilayer geogrid. The layered geogrid aims to increase confinement of soils and aggregate for geotechnical engineering environments such as roadway and earthwork construction and therefore increase the lifetime of pavements. The multilayer geogrid comprises an outer hexagon with continuous ribs and primary nodes and an inner hexagon with non-continuous ribs that preferably terminate at secondary nodes of the inner hexagon, thus creating patterned discontinuities. The nodes have a heightened aspect ratio in relation to the ribs, the primary nodes preferably being larger and less pliable than the secondary nodes. The compressible cellular layer preferably forms the top and bottom of the geogrid with a core of polymeric material, the compressible cellular material may have voids and surface roughness or additives that increase surface area for increased soil interaction and may be a closed cell compressible cellular layer providing buoyancy to the ribs. Also provided are geogrid systems and method.
